| Aikido has its roots in the JuJitsu styles of ancient Japan, some of which date back hundreds of years. Modern Aikido was was created by Morihei Ueshiba based on his years of study in JuJitsu, AikiJitsu and Japanese weapons. The techniques of Aikido allow you to control an opponent by the use of evasion, disruption of balance, and joint locks, usually to the elbow and wrist. Aikido includes many graceful techniques which are designed to use an attackers strength against him. Aikido is well known for being not only a highly effective art, but one that can restrain opponents without severely hurting them. The style of Aikido practiced at our Dojo is Kentai Aikido. It is based primarily on Tomiki Ryu Aikido . This style contains an organized system of katas (forms, or exercises) that makes it possible for students to learn the basic principles of this flowing and adaptive art in a structured and easily understood format. Our style of Aikido also incorporates quite a bit of JuJitsu to add even more to it's self-defense capabilities. This includes practice in basic striking and blocking techniques as well as throws, ground fighting, and weapons defense. Aikido is an excellent way to learn self-defense and to improve balance, coordination, and overall physical conditioning. One of the great things about Aikido is that a wide variety of people can practice it since it allows everyone to work at their own level and pace. The Minimum age for Aikido is 15. |
